AL BAYT STADIUM
Qatar
Al Bayt Stadium, which hosted the world’s top football players during the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022, features a giant tent-like structure that covers the entire stadium, paying homage to the traditional Bedouin tents of the region. Located in the northern city of Al Khor, the stadium has a seating capacity of 60,000 spectators. In addition to the stadium itself, an extensive development project included the construction of new roads and bridges. Steep reinforced fill was required for the approach to the bridge entrance, necessitating the use of a stepped retaining structure.

AL MADAM ROUNDABOUT

The ‘Al Madam’ roundabout in Sharjah required the construction of a Mechanically Stabilised Earth (MSE) wall along one of its ramps. This ramp serves as the elevated access to a new roundabout, which is expected to significantly improve traffic flow in the area. The retaining wall was originally designed in tiers, with an intermediate bench incorporated to allow for future landscaping and plantation works, which will enhance the visual appeal of the structure. An important aspect of the design was the requirement for the facing of the MSE wall to be beige in colour, matching the surrounding sand to ensure a natural, seamless blend with the environment. This focus on aesthetics was critical for maintaining the visual harmony of the infrastructure with its surroundings. The MSE wall not only serves a functional purpose by providing support for the elevated ramp but also contributes to the overall appearance of the site. This project successfully combines structural integrity with thoughtful design, addressing both the technical and visual requirements of the area.

BUSINESS BAY ACCESS STRATEGY SERVICE ROAD-24

The project involved constructing a new link road as a diversion at the middle of an existing 6m high ramp made of concrete walls. The new link road's goal is to improve traffic connection within Dubai's Business Bay neighbourhoods. The new ramp will be built with a back-to-back type of Mechanically Stabilized Earth Wall (MSE Wall) that will be joined to the old concrete wall within tight space limitations. This demanded a novel method of attaching the MSE wall's facing to concrete wall anchors, and the challenge was to design and construct an MSE wall system in extreme space constraints
