High-stiffness mesh for rockfall protection
Maccaferri HEA Panels (High Energy Absorption) are the stiffest products within our Mac.RO(TM) Systems mesh range, offering extreme strength at low strain. Stiffness is more important than tensile strength of meshes as it affects the deflection of the system under load. The panels are woven from a single continuous length of high tensile strength steel wire rope, joined at each crossing point with the patented HEA 'double knot' connection.
Unlike single twist spiral rope nets, the construction of HEA Panels provides exceptional stress/strain performance with the lowest possible deformation. HEA Panels are used in secured drapery applications where a low deflection and high strength system is required. Due to the multi-axial performance of the panel, loads are transferred effectively to the anchors on the slope face regardless of the anchor layout.
HEA panels made from polymer coated cables are also available for demanding exposure conditions. The patented knot connection is made by two bindings, each one obtained by looping a pair of steel 3.00 mm wires coated with Galmac, a Zinc-Aluminium (5%) alloy. The two bindings tightly envelop the ropes crossing each other. The panel is made of square meshes manufactured with one rope, secured by a pressed aluminium ferrule, according to EN 13411-3.

CANTERA ZIORDIA
The Ziordia quarry has an orography formed by limestone rock, with steep slopes as a result of quarrying, and potentially unstable large blocks. The company CRS Ingeniería contacted Bianchini Ingeniero to analyse the situation and possible solutions, and subsequently the company Inaccés Geotècnica Vertical also intervened. One of the main risks was the blocks that could fall from a 40-metre-high, 15-metre-wide mochón, located on one of the quarry's usual passageways. This represented a potential risk for the installations and the workers themselves. Therefore, a series of actions were carried out to stabilise these blocks and protect the area.

OCEANS UMHLANGA MALL

Oceans Umhlanga is one of KZN’s iconic retail parks. The mall development faced significant challenges, including the requirement for well-engineered retaining structures for large cut embankments at the rear of the site. The retaining structure needed to be vertical and form part of the superstructure's final aesthetic. The wall created a platform for a service road above. The design had to consider geotechnical limitations and existing municipal services, whilst the vertical wall had to be constructed within a confined space because the multi-storey building construction was underway. The retaining wall was to be designed to butt against a contiguous piled wall that was already constructed for the superstructure. Standard design codes require a minimum tieback length of 0. 7 multiplied by the overall height. This was not achievable and additional measures had to be used in the form of shotcrete and soil nails for embankment stabilisation, thus allowing for the use of shorter tieback lengths without compromising structural stability. Stringent deadlines and rigorous QC & QA procedures demanded exceptional quality from design, manufacture, supply and installation with minimal margins for error.
